In 2004, The TMA Group partnered with Williamson County to form
the Clean Air Partnership of Williamson County, a public-private
coalition that coordinates the Air Alert Day program and educates
all citizens about air pollution, as well as promoting the use
of alternate modes of transportation. The Clean Air Partnership
of Williamson County produces an educational television show "Air
Care".
To date, fifty Clean Air Partners with over 11,000 employees
are participating. Partners notify employees of Air Alert Days,
and distribute materials about commute alternatives such as carpooling,
van pooling and Franklin Trolley services - on Air Alert Days
rides are free on the Franklin Trolleys! Air Alert Days occur
when days are hot, extremely sunny, with no precipitation or wind.
Conditions are favorable for ozone formation. Ozone is created
when nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compounds combine with
sunlight. Auto emissions account for 40% of the ozone causing
pollutants.
Clean Air Partners receive Air Alert e-mails on the afternoon
preceding an Air Alert Day. Partners send broadcast e-mails to
their employees notifying them of the air's unhealthy conditions.
On Air Alert Days people with asthma, respiratory disease, and
heart conditions, senior citizens, young children, and active
individuals should consider limiting strenuous outdoor activities.
Citizens can reduce air pollution by: sharing a ride or using
public transportation; driving smart: combining errands, limiting
engine idling, and avoiding rush hour; postponing mowing and filling
of gas tanks until evening; and conserving energy at home. |
