Commuter Choice Benefits

Within the United States, a number of programs exist to help lower the cost of sharing the ride.
As of 2009, employers can provide employees with up to $230 per month in tax-free vanpool and
transit benefits, as specified under Section 132(f)(2)(A) Qualified Transportation Fringe Benefits
regarding the aggregate fringe benefit exclusion amount for vanpools (commuter highway
vehicles) and transit passes. The monthly limitation under Section 132(f)(2)(B) regarding the
fringe benefit exclusion amount for qualified parking is $230. Commuters can receive both the
transit and parking benefits (i.e., up to $460 per month). Employers can allow employees to use
pretax dollars to pay for transit passes, vanpool fares and parking.

Additional Benefits of Vanpooling:

  • Save money on gas, insurance, and vehicle maintenance
  • Save time
  • Reduce stress
  • Reduce wear and tear on personal vehicle
  • Decrease traffic congestion – a full van removes 8 to 14 cars off the road
  • Improve air quality and reduce toxic vehicle pollutants
